Play like David Gilmour

Slow singing bends, long notes, and melodies that leave plenty of space.

4 lessons

David Gilmour can make a handful of notes feel like a whole song. His solos with Pink Floyd, from "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" to "Comfortably Numb", are built on slow bends that land perfectly in tune, long notes and plenty of space. This chapter teaches you that melodic approach in B minor, around the 7th fret.

You start with slow bends to pitch, hearing the target first and letting the note travel up with control. Space and long notes teaches call and response with whole bars of silence and a slow, even vibrato that keeps long notes alive. Dorian melodies add the major pentatonic view and the G# from B Dorian for that bittersweet, open sound, and pre-bend releases show you how to make a line sigh by bending silently and letting the note fall.

Every exercise plays as tab in your browser with a click and a tempo ladder, and each lesson ends with a checkpoint. The tone tips point to a Gilmour-style sound: neck pickup, smooth overdrive or fuzz and a touch of delay. Above all, you'll learn to play less and say more.
