Jazz Études

Three original pieces that put shells, ii-V-Is and bebop lines to work.

3 lessons

These three jazz guitar études turn shells, ii-V-Is and bebop lines into complete pieces. Each one has an intro, a head played twice, a solo and an outro, so you learn to comp and solo through a whole tune and keep your place in the form.

Lamplight Walk is a relaxed swing piece in C major that uses only shell voicings, Charleston comping and simple chord-tone lines, with one chromatic approach note in the solo. Slate Harbour is a moody étude in A minor built on the minor ii-V-i, with anticipations, a syncopated melody and an enclosure in the solo. Copper Rooftops is bright and up-tempo in F major: a I-VI-ii-V turnaround, two chords per bar, a melody full of enclosures and a bebop solo that uses the bebop dominant scale.

Every étude plays as tab in your browser in swing feel with a click, and the tempo ladder lets you learn each section slowly before you raise the speed. A checkpoint ends each piece. When you finish, you'll be able to play a short jazz tune from top to bottom with a relaxed, steady swing.
