Play like Jimmy Page

Loose pentatonic pull-off runs, ringing open-string riffs and bends held to the edge.

4 lessons

Jimmy Page's playing in Led Zeppelin is loose, bold and full of attitude: fast pentatonic runs that tumble rather than march, riffs that ring against open strings and bends held right on the edge. This chapter breaks the Jimmy Page style into four lessons in A, built around box 1 of the minor pentatonic and first-position riffs.

You start with repeating pull-off runs, three-note cells that let pull-offs do half the work so a lick sounds faster than it is. Open-string riffs show how fretted notes bouncing off a ringing open A make a single line sound almost like two guitars. Bend and hold teaches whole-step bends sustained and re-picked without sagging out of tune. Finally, mixing major and minor adds the C# and F# to the pentatonic box for that blurry, bluesy colour between the two.

Every exercise is a tab that plays in your browser with a click and a tempo ladder, and each lesson ends with a checkpoint. You also get tone tips for a Page-style crunch: humbucker, medium gain and the guitar volume doing part of the work.
