Legato

Hammer-ons and pull-offs for fast, smooth runs.

5 lessons

Legato is how guitarists play fast, flowing lines without picking every note. This chapter turns hammer-ons and pull-offs into a real technique, with legato guitar exercises that build strength, evenness and control in your fretting hand.

You start with pull-off triplets in A minor pentatonic, learning to flick the string so the pulled note is as loud as the picked one. Then come trill bursts, short rapid hammer-on and pull-off loops that build speed without tension. Next you learn hammer-ons from nowhere, starting notes on a new string with the fretting hand alone, and how to mute the strings around them. After that you move to three-notes-per-string legato runs in A natural minor, the classic shape for fast scale runs, and finish with legato licks that use these moves musically.

Every exercise plays in your browser with a click, so you can hear when each note is even and climb the tempo ladder only when it stays smooth. The checkpoint at the end of each lesson tells you when you're ready to move on. By the end, your runs will sound fluid, even and clean.
