Rock Études

Three short rock pieces that put riffs, rhythm and leads together.

3 lessons

This chapter brings the rock part together in three short, original pieces, each with an intro, a verse, a solo and an outro. Instead of practicing riffs, rhythm and leads in separate boxes, you'll play them back to back the way they happen in a real rock song.

Streetlight Static is your first full rock piece: a mid-tempo tune in E minor with open power chords, palm-muted chugs and a short solo in open-position E minor pentatonic, played with a crunchy overdrive rather than full distortion. Neon Freight steps up to A minor with three-note power chords, pushed chords that land before the beat, and a bluesy solo in box 1 with bends, a pull-off cascade and double-stops. Ember Circuit is the advanced one: a galloping sixteenth-note riff in D minor, a fast solo at the 10th fret and a two-hand tapping lick, built for a high-gain tone with a noise gate.

Learn each section with the click, then play the whole étude top to bottom. Passing the checkpoint means you can hold a rock tune together from the first bar to the last.
