Play like Kirk Hammett

Fast pentatonic runs, wah-drenched repeating licks and galloping E minor riffs.

4 lessons

Kirk Hammett's lead guitar in Metallica is fast, aggressive and soaked in wah, while the band's riffs gallop like a stampede. Think of the solos on "Master of Puppets" or "Enter Sandman". This chapter teaches you the Kirk Hammett style in four lessons, all in E minor.

You start with fast pentatonic runs in box 1 at the 12th fret, using strict alternate picking and small repeating cells that your hands can play on autopilot. Wah-friendly repeating licks combine a bend, a release and a pull-off into loops, and show you how to lock the wah sweep to the rhythm so it sounds musical, not random. E minor gallops cover the palm-muted thrash metal rhythm behind countless riffs, with power chords. Open-string pull-offs finish the chapter with fast, aggressive flurries against the open B and high e strings.

Every exercise is a tab that plays in your browser with a click and a tempo ladder, and each lesson ends with a checkpoint. Tone tips point to a high-gain, bridge-humbucker sound with a wah before the drive.
