The goal: a bright, clean tone with snappy attack and a quick echo that makes every note pop.

Tweak it

  • Faster songs, shorter slapback. At quick tempos, move the delay toward 80-100 ms so the echo doesn't blur your lines. Slower shuffles can go toward 120-140 ms.
  • Too much squash? If the compressor kills your dynamics, back off Sustain before you touch anything else. You want snap, not a flat line.
  • Lost the attack? Set the compressor's Attack slower so the first spike of each note gets through before it clamps down.
  • Bright pickups. If your bridge pickup gets harsh, drop the amp Treble to noon rather than darkening every pedal.
  • Hybrid picking. The compressor helps balance pick and fingers. A/B it on and off while you mix pick and finger notes to hear the difference.

Signal chain

Guitar to amp, left to right. Settings are starting points to get you close: trust your ears.

  1. 1. Tuner

    Tuner

First in line, so it reads a clean signal and mutes you while you tune.

  2. 2. Compressor

    Compressor

    Sustain
    10:00

The heart of the country board: it evens out your picking and adds the "quack" and snap that chicken pickin' depends on. Attack on the slow side (lets the pick click through), Level so bypass and on match.

  3. 3. Overdrive

    Light overdrive or clean boost

    Tone
    1:00

Not for distortion: it pushes the amp a little harder for solos, or adds a touch of hair to the edges. Gain 8-9 o'clock, Level 1-2 o'clock.

  4. 4. Delay

    Slapback delay

    Feedback
    7:00
    Mix
    10:00

One quick repeat that doubles each note, a sound tied to 1950s rockabilly and country records. Time about 80-140 ms, Feedback at minimum for a single repeat.

  5. 5. ReverbOptional

    Spring reverb

    Tone
    12:00

A little drip and space. Mix 9-10 o'clock. Many amps already have one built in; if yours does, skip the pedal.

  6. 6. Amp

    Bright clean amp, Fender-style

    Bass
    11:00
    Mid
    10:00
    Treble
    1:00

Plenty of headroom; Fender-style cleans are the classic pairing. Volume just below breakup.

Checkpoint

Move on when you can do all of these.

  • Explain why the compressor is the key pedal on a country board
  • Set a slapback delay with a single repeat between 80 and 140 ms
  • Set up the chain in this order and A/B the compressor on and off while hybrid picking
