Practice Routines

How to practice, plus ready-made 10, 20 and 45-minute sessions.

7 lessons

Most players don't need more practice time, they need a better guitar practice routine. This chapter shows you how to practice guitar with deliberate focus, then hands you ready-made sessions for days when you have 10, 20 or 45 minutes.

You start with the rules of deliberate practice: one goal per session, slow and accurate playing, looping the hard bit and stopping before it gets sloppy. Then you learn the tempo ladder, the simplest way to build speed without building mistakes, and why recording yourself and resting between sessions both make you improve faster. The second half is practical: a ten-minute warm-up, a twenty-minute daily guitar practice routine that touches technique, chord changes and rhythm, a longer session with fretboard work, an étude and improvisation, and a speed-building routine with bursts, chunking and accent shifting.

Each drill plays in your browser with a click, and the checkpoint at the end of each lesson gives you a clear goal. By the end you'll know exactly what to play when you pick up the guitar, and how to keep getting better week after week.
